Speed Camera Citations

In response to complaints and concerns of speeding in school zones and in an effort to enhance safety for children and pedestrians near schools, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, in July 2012, introduced the Automated School Zone Speed Enforcement program.

The speed camera program consists of six speed cameras that are rotated every two weeks among the following locations:

  • Smallwood Dr @ Wade Elementary School
  • Poplar Hill Rd @ Malcolm Elementary School
  • Leonardtown Rd @ Grace Christian Academy
  • Indian Head Hwy @ Smallwood Middle School
  • Berry Rd @ Berry Elementary School
  • Berry Rd @ Jenifer Elementary School
  • Middletown Rd @ Westlake High School
  • Piney Church Rd @ St. Charles High School
  • Oliver’s Shop Rd @ T.C. Martin Elementary School/St. Mary’s Bryantown
  • Livingston Rd @ J.C. Parks Elementary School
  • Indian Head Hwy @ Indian Head Elementary School
  • Lancaster Cir @ Barnhart Elementary School
  • St. Georges Dr @ Neal Elementary School
  • Davis Rd @ Davis Middle School
  • Ironsides Rd @ Mt. Hope Elementary School
  • Chicamuxen Rd @ Lackey High School
  • Rock Point Rd @ Piccowaxen Middle School

The speed cameras operate Monday – Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., with the exception of Wade Elementary School, which runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cameras operate year round, including holidays and during the summer.

Speed camera violations are civil violations that carry a fine of $40.00. A vehicle must be traveling 12 miles per hour or more in order to receive a citation. These citations are civil in nature, therefore, there are no points on your driver’s license and does not impact your automobile insurance.

Failure to pay fines for speed cameras violations may result in a flag put on the registration, along with a $30.00 administrative fee that will have to be paid prior to any renewal at the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. You will not be able to make changes at the MVA until the fines and administrative fees are paid.

How To Pay A Speed Camera Citation

By Mail: Mail a check, money order, or cashier’s check, made payable to the Charles County Government and mail to the following address. Please make sure you include your citation number on the payment. Please do not send cash.

Online: You may pay online at www.public.cite-web.com. You must have your citation number and pin number in order to utilize this site. You may also go through the Charles County Government website to make payments, you still must have your citation number and pin number.

How To Request A Court Date For Speed Camera Citations

You may request to appear in District Court by completing the form at the bottom of your citation and returning it at least (5) FIVE days prior to the “Due Date” shown on the front of your citation. Return the completed request to:

Transfer Of Liability For Speed Camera Citations

If the registered owner was not driving the vehicle at the time of the infraction, the owner must request a court date and provide to the judge as defense the operators current name and information of the operator to include their name and valid mailing address. The owner must attend the hearing to raise this defense.

This policy does not apply to vehicles that are the following: Class E (truck) with a registered gross weight of 26,001 pounds or more, Class F (tractor) vehicle, Class G (trailer) vehicle operated in combination was a Class F (tractor) vehicle, or a Class P (passenger bus). A sworn to and affirmed letter must be sent with the information of the person driving, to include the full name and address. A hearing must be requested and the letter can be sent after a hearing notice is received.

Red Light Camera Citations

In an effort to reduce red light violations and the automobile collisions that result, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office operates red light cameras at intersections throughout the county.

The red light cameras are installed at the following locations:

The red light cameras operate 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. A red light camera citation is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle and carry a fine of $75.00. Bus Camera Citations

In 2019 the Bus Camera Program was initiated in an effort to provide additional safety measures with the installation of outside cameras on the school buses in Charles County.

Each bus in Charles County was outfitted with cameras to deter drivers from passing school buses stopped with alternating, flashing red signals. The red flashing lights are used when children are either loading or unloading.

The fine for passing a stopped school bus is $250.00. These are civil citations therefore, there are no points and does not impact your automobile insurance.

Failure to pay fines for bus camera citations may result in a flag put on the registration, along with a $30.00 administrative fee. The MVA will not renew tags or make any changes until the fines and administrative fees are paid.

Phone Payment: You may make a phone payment directly to Bus Patrol Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. est. at 1-877-504-7080. They accept Visa, MasterCard and Discover. You will need to have your citation number available when you call.
