The Charles County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of suspicious activity that occurred about 8:40 a.m. on Sept. 18 at a school bus stop at the intersection of Normandie Woods Drive and Charles Street in La Plata. A man in a sport-utility vehicle stopped at the bus stop, lowered his passenger-side window and initiated a conversation with a 6-year-old boy who was alone at the stop. The boy’s mother, who had been watching her son from a location nearby, ran to the vehicle and confronted the driver, who reportedly said he was asking for directions. The driver then sped away westbound on Charles Street toward La Plata. The school bus arrived, collected the boy and then departed the stop. Shortly thereafter, the woman observed the SUV return to the area. The vehicle was traveling slowly on the eastbound side of Charles Street and then turned into the Clark’s Run neighborhood.
The driver of the SUV was described as a white male between 45 and 50 years old. He had thick, short, dark brown, neatly-groomed hair and a neatly-groomed goatee. He wore prescription eyeglasses. His vehicle was described as a silver or light blue Honda Pilot with darkly tinted windows.
Anyone with information about the incident or who observes suspicious activity is asked to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office at 301-932-2222.
Officer M. Hancock is investigating.
