Less than three days after a vehicle hit a pedestrian in a wheelchair crossing St. Charles Parkway in Waldorf and fled the scene, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office has identified the driver and recovered the vehicle.
Yesterday evening after analyzing information obtained during the on-scene investigation, the Traffic Operations Unit narrowed the description of the vehicle responsible for the crash to a 2000 white Ford Windstar van. They sent a lookout for the vehicle to all CCSO officers, one of whom recalled seeing a vehicle matching that description at a house in Waldorf. The Traffic Operations Unit investigated the lead and ultimately determined the officer had successfully identified the vehicle involved in the crash. They identified the driver as a 28-year-old Waldorf woman, interviewed her and recovered the vehicle as evidence. The investigation remains ongoing. Charges against the driver are pending.
The investigation began on Aug. 17 about 11 p.m., when the CCSO responded to the report of the crash, which occurred at the intersection of St. Charles Parkway and St. Thomas Drive in Waldorf. The preliminary investigation indicated the victim, a 35-year-old Waldorf man in a wheelchair, was attempting to cross the parkway when a vehicle struck him and fled the scene. Witnesses called 911. Police and Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived on the scene and believed the victim’s injuries were possibly life-threatening. The victim was flown to Prince George’s Hospital Center, where his condition stabilized. He has since been released from the hospital.
